Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been widely used as high-performance lubricants owing to their excellent thermal stability and low friction properties; however, their environmental persistence has prompted increasingly strict regulations, driving the need for sustainable alternatives.
Herein, functionalized polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) lubricants were synthesized via hydrosilylation with phenyl and fluorinated olefins. Lubricant viscosity was systematically tuned by controlling the degree of functionalization. Phenyl groups improved thermal stability, while fluorinated moieties enhanced wear resistance and friction-reducing behavior.
The optimized PMHS lubricants exhibited thermal and tribological performances comparable to those of commercial perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricants, demonstrating their potential as PFAS-free, high-performance lubricant alternatives
