A smart anti-counterfeiting ink was developed based on cyanostilbene-derived liquid crystal monomers (CLCM). In this system, CLCM acts as a solid-state luminogen and a phase-transition trigger. The ink also contains conventional LC monomers (RM 257 and LC 242), which are uniaxially aligned on the substrate by shear coating. Upon 365 nm UV exposure through a photomask, photoisomerization of CLCM induces a localized nematic-to-isotropic transition in the exposed regions. Subsequent 460 nm blue-light irradiation photopolymerizes the aligned mixture to provide patterned films. Microscopic and optical analyses demonstrate multilevel anti-counterfeiting labels using the resulting films.
