Polyxanthane-based Anion Exchange Membranes and Ionomers for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

Anion exchange membranes and ionomers are a critical technology for next generation energy conversion devices such as fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and CO2 electrolyzers. The design of anion exchange membranes and ionomers have generally relied on new membrane chemical structures. In this talk, we introduce polyxanthane-based anion exchange membranes and ionomers with controlled phase separation behavior to modulate water uptake and swelling to optimize both hydroxide conductivity and mechanical properties. We demonstrate promising anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer performance and durability and introduce a family of new hydroxide conducting materials for next generation energy conversion devices.
