Magnetic-Field-Directed Phase Transitions of Block Copolymers

Abstract

We investigated the magnetic-field-directed phase transition to fabricate an oriented double gyroid structure and the relevant lattice distortion of block copolymer/magnetic nanoparticle nanocomposites formed by the polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) using the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This transition was driven by sequential generation of 3-fold junctions via the fusion at curved faces of deformed cylindrical segments containing the magnetic-field-guided spatially assembled MNPs. Meanwhile, the occurrence of lattice distortions was deduced to be governed by the preferred growth direction of PEO crystallites, which promoted distortion of the double gyroid cubic lattice.
