Abstract

Polyaniline (PANI) suffers from limited redox stability due to degradation of the pernigraniline salt (PS) state, which restricts its practical capacity. Here, we introduce a protic additive, propylene glycol, into nonaqueous electrolytes to stabilize the PS state via hydrogen bonding. This approach enabled highly reversible redox behavior and an extended lifetime of 3,850-cycle in Zn-based supercapacitors. Furthermore, we developed electrochromic energy storage systems by tailoring PANI morphologies to enhance Zn2+ diffusion. Among them, porous PANI delivered 97.3% of capacity retention over 1,400 cycles. Notably, the porous PANI electrodes exhibited excellent electrochromic performance with coloration efficiency, indicating distinguishable charged and discharged states of the batteries. These findings demonstrate that chemical stabilization and morphological engineering is a promising strategy to boost electrochemical and electrochromic performance of PANI electrodes.
