Impact of Configurational Isomerism on Nanostructure and Hydrogen Evolution in Y6-Based Photocatalysts

Abstract

We synthesized two geometrically distinct but chemically identical single-molecule photocatalysts, cis-YCO and trans-YCO, based on a Y6 core with a carbonyl bridge. This subtle configurational difference significantly affects their nanoparticle morphology, optical properties, and hydrogen evolution performance. While both show similar absorption in solution and film, trans-YCO exhibits a red-shifted absorption in nanoparticle form, indicating different nanoscale organization. These results emphasize the importance of molecular-level design in tuning self-assembled structures and optimizing photocatalytic activity. This work offers a strategy for designing next-generation single-molecule organic photocatalysts with controlled morphology and high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency, and it underscores the need for further studies on structure–property relationships in photocatalytic systems.
