Abstract

This study investigates urushiol, a catechol derivative with a C15–C17 alkyl chain, as a sustainable bio-based interfacial modifier for silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The formation of covalent Si-O-C bonds between the hydroxyl groups of urushiol and the silanol groups on silica was confirmed through FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS analysis, demonstrating strong interfacial bonding. The hydrophobic long alkyl chain and unsaturated structure of urushiol enhance filler dispersion and facilitate secondary interactions with the rubber matrix. Universal testing machine results showed improved tensile properties, while abrasion resistance was significantly enhanced compared to composites with unmodified silica. These findings suggest that urushiol can act as a sustainable alternative to conventional silane coupling agents, providing a promising strategy for the development of eco-friendly rubber composites beyond tire applications.
