Abstract

Detecting humidity is crucial in many fields, but most sensors need power, react slowly, or are made using costly and complicated processes. In this study, an optical sensor is constructed by integrating a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) structure with a hydrophilic polymer. Successful fabrication and subsequent extraction of the non-reactive mesogenic moiety from the CLC solid film made it porous for monomer infiltration and subsequent cross-linked hydrophilic polymer network formation. The prepared film in exposure to change in %RH underwent redshift in a short time and returned to its original state accordingly. The color change was visible to the naked eye, so no complex equipment was needed. The sensor worked well over many cycles and keeps its optical appearance and performance. This simple and low-cost method could be useful for making other sensors that respond to changes in the environment.
