Abstract

Reliable electrode-tissue adhesion is critical for accurate electrophysiological recordings during surgical, but signal quality deteriorates when electrodes detach. Conventional hydrogel-based bioadhesives, while providing tissue adhesion, create impedance barriers due to their thickness, compromising signal acquisition and electrode sensitivity. Here, an ultrathin bioadhesive coating achieving strong tissue adhesion while not damaging electrode impedance was developed via initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). A poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) (pPFMA) film reacts with amine groups of extracellular matrix proteins at body temperature. Adhesion tests in phosphate-buffered saline using flexible parylene substrates and porcine tissue verified that carbonyl groups in pPFMA provide strong adhesion and high hydrolytic stability. The ultrathin layer yielded a low impedance, supporting its suitability for electrodes intended for reliable electrophysiological signal acquisition.
