Abstract

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) play a vital role in electrochemical energy systems, including fuel cells and water electrolyzers. While perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA)-based membranes are widely used, their high cost and limited stability under low humidity or high temperature have prompted interest in hydrocarbon-based alternatives. However, achieving both high proton conductivity and dimensional stability in hydrocarbon PEMs remains a critical challenge.
In this study, hydrocarbon-based PEMs were designed by incorporating hydrophilic functional groups into the polymer structure to facilitate efficient water-mediated proton conduction. Backbone rigidity and controlled microphase separation were also introduced to suppress membrane swelling and enhance mechanical integrity. The resulting membranes exhibit improved conductivity and dimensional stability, demonstrating their potential for next-generation electrochemical applications.
