Abstract

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) exhibit structural color through Bragg reflection, arising from their helical molecular alignment. The structure of liquid crystal mesogens plays a key role in tuning both the mechanical and optical properties of CLCEs. We investigated the effect of incorporating RM105, a monofunctional mesogen with a single vinyl group, into CLCE films. Unlike RM82, which has two acrylate groups for dense crosslinking, RM105 forms bonds at only one end, reducing the crosslinking density and increasing network flexibility. As RM105 content increases, the elastic modulus of the CLCE decreases, allowing for larger wavelength shifts under deformation. These findings suggest that adjusting monoacrylate mesogen ratios provides an effective strategy to control both the softness and mechanochromic response of CLCEs, enabling the development of flexible optical materials for adaptive optics, strain sensors, and stretchable displays
