Surface-Bound Parabens on UV-Blocking Nanoparticles to Minimize Human Absorption

Abstract

Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics, but concerns remain about their possible health effects. To reduce direct exposure while keeping their antibacterial function, we attached parabens to titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles, which are often used in sunscreens. Linker molecules were used to help bind parabens to the TiO₂ surface. This surface treatment was confirmed using TGA, FT-IR, and zeta potential tests. HPLC results showed that the treated TiO₂ had better paraben adsorption. Cell tests showed over 80% survival, suggesting good biocompatibility. The modified TiO₂ also showed stronger antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, supporting its use as a safer and more effective cosmetic ingredient.
