Functional Siloxane-Coated Porous Membranes with Wettability Engineering for Selective Liquid Separation and Chemical Durability

Abstract

Porous membrane-based liquid separation requires chemical resistance and selective permeability, making it essential in semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and fine chemical industries. However, conventional polymer membranes lack precise control over surface wettability, limiting separation performance. This study presents a strategy to regulate wettability by coating a nano-scaled organic siloxane polymer thin film. Poly(2,4,6,8-tetravinyl-2,4,6,8-tetramethylcylotetrasiloxane) (pV4D4), was successfully deposited to nano-scaled thin film via initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD). The coating enabled separation of mixtures with small surface tension differences by modulating surface energy and enhanced the chemical resistance of polyethersulfone membranes, maintaining stability after 24-hour solvent exposure. This approach offers a cost-effective and selective methodology to ceramic membranes for liquid separation and addresses instability in conventional polymer membrane permeability.
