Abstract

Poly (butylene terephthalate) is widely used across industries due to its excellent mechanical strength, but its recyclability is limited by filler compounding. In addition, its rapid crystallization rate makes it difficult to achieve the desired performance, leading to an underestimation of its material potential. In this study, spiroglycol (SPG) was selected as a comonomer to tune these properties. SPG monomers (≤ 40 mol%) were randomly introduced into the PBT chain through esterification and polycondensation, thereby synthesizing poly(butylene-co-spirocyclic terephthalate) (PBST). SPG’s two spiro rings and methyl groups make it bulky. It reduces crystallinity and allows control over the crystallization rate of PBT. It also offers advantages such as increased glass transition temperature (Tg), transparency, and enhanced processability. Furthermore, the acetal bonds in SPG are cleavable under mild acidic conditions, enabling control over the decomposition rate.
