Rheo-Mechanics and Applications of Nanomaterial and Polymer Dispersions

Abstract

The colloidal and thermodysnamic stability, and rheological properties of carbon based nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (1D) and graphene oxide (2D) play critical roles in fiber spinning, printing, and electrode coating processes. Due to their large size and anisotropy, colloidal stability was evaluated using a modified DLVO model that considers excluded volume effects. At equilibrium, thermodynamic stability was investigated based on morphological changes and variations in orientation factor observed in the 3D confocal microscopy images of the dispersion. Phase transition was explained using number density, and the self-consistent orientational distribution from the Onsager model. Under flow, microstructural evolution was investigated by measuring shear viscosity and applying theoretical models. Extensional rheology was evaluated using the Hyper-Spin-Line (HSL) model to analyze the influence of CNT waviness during the process of liquid crystalline wet-spun fibers.
