Tunable Mechanical Properties in Dynamic Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Abstract

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are stimuli-responsive materials that combine the elasticity of rubber with the anisotropic properties of liquid crystals, enabling reversible and programmable shape changes in response to external stimuli. These features have attracted increasing interest for applications in soft robotics, actuators, and adaptive devices. However, conventional LCEs suffer from limited reprocessability after curing. To overcome this limitation, we introduce dynamic covalent bonds into LCE networks to enable reprogrammability with tunable mechanical properties by a systematic formulation. This study demonstrates dynamic LCEs can be used in next-generation smart systems.
