Abstract

Dynamic crystals exhibiting colossal thermal expansion (TE) are promising candidates for next-generation smart actuators—including artificial muscles, origami systems, and soft roboticsdue to their large, continuous volumetric change and linear thermal responsiveness. However, practical implementation is hindered by difficulties in processing and scaling the materials while preserving their single-crystallinity. Here, we present a thermally responsive bimorph actuator composed of an active 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-P) crystalline film integrated with a passive SU-8 layer. A meniscus-guided printing technique enables intrinsic crystallographic alignment of the TIPS-P film. The resulting actuator demonstrates rapid actuation and high curvature (6.7–10.8 cm⁻¹), attributed to the colossal TE coefficient (488 MK⁻¹) of TIPS-P. Furthermore, the actuator delivers measurable mechanical work ranging from 3.27 to 5.6 × 10⁻⁷ J.
