Abstract

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are promising for next-generation optoelectronic applications due to their outstanding optical properties. However, their instability, caused by surface defects and weakly bound hydrophobic ligands, hinders practical usage. These ligands are easily detached during purification or storage, resulting in optical degradation and particle aggregation. To overcome this issue, we propose a ligand engineering strategy using taurine, a zwitterionic ligand possessing both ammonium (–NH₃⁺) and sulfonate (–SO₃⁻) groups. Taurine enables dual-site surface passivation by simultaneously coordinating with surface-exposed Pb²⁺ and halide ions, improving surface stability. This strategy provides better ligand retention under water and moisture exposure, enhancing both structural and optical durability. Our findings suggest that zwitterionic ligand-based passivation is a promising approach for improving PQD stability in optoelectronic devices.
