Abstract
The rapid growth of IoT and human–machine interfaces demands flexible, self-powered inputs. Rigid touch sensors that rely on stiff electrodes and external power limit usability. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) generate electricity from mechanical stimuli but must still deliver high output while remaining stretchable. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels, whose electrical and mechanical properties are tunable through plasticizer type and content, meet this requirement. We compared three plasticizers—butyl benzoate (BB), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and tributyl trimellitate (TBT)—in PVC TENGs and triboresistive position sensors (TPSs). Fewer aliphatic carbonyl groups enhanced deformability, dielectric constant, and triboelectric negativity. BB-plasticized PVC produced the highest power density, and TPSs fabricated from it preserved precise sensing at 50 % strain. These findings underscore the promise of PVC-gel devices for transparent, stretchable wearable electronics.
