Abstract

Polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs) reversibly switch between transparent and scattering states, enabling use in displays, smart windows.
Incorporatoin of thiol-terminated non-mesogenic monomers reduces the driving voltage. However, incomplete polymerization during a single-step photopolymerization process often causes image retention and hysteresis.
In this study, we present a two-step polymerization strategy to enhance the electro-optical stability of PSLCs. The first step involves a base-catalyzed Michael addition reaction, followed by UV-induced photopolymerization. This sequential process allows the complete consumption of thiol groups, effectively suppressing image sticking and hysteresis. The effects of component concentrations and polymerization parameters were systematically investigated to optimize device performance. The proposed approach offers a practical and scalable solution for fabricating highly stable PSLCs for advanced display and photonic applications.
