Designing a fully Bio-Based Copolyester from 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid: Linking Molecular Structure to Stiff but Elastic Properties

Abstract

Mechanical stiffness and elastic recovery are often difficult to achieve simultaneously due to conflicting structural requirements. Here, we present a fully bio-based copolyester, poly(propylene-co-cyclohexanedimethylene furanoate) (PPCF), that overcomes this challenge. Polar aromatic 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid units impart high rigidity, while the asymmetric molecular structure enables elastic potential. Consequently, PPCF exhibits a Young’s modulus of 2785 MPa, tensile strength of 69.8 MPa, and notched impact strength of 142.7 J·m⁻¹, comparable to engineering plastics. Notably, PPCF recovers its shape at 65 °C, below its glass transition temperature, even after plastic deformation beyond the yield point. These findings highlight PPCF as a sustainable, high-performance polymer combining mechanical strength and recoverability for advanced applications.
