Abstract

This study presents the development of a biodegradable high-barrier coating film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), aiming to improve moisture and oil resistance while maintaining structural stability. To overcome the water sensitivity and poor oil resistance of PVA, a base coating solution was formulated with ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) as a crosslinker. The composite films were then produced by bar coating.  FT-IR analysis confirmed esterification-based crosslinking between functional groups of PVA and CNC. The resulting chemical network enhanced film stability during water-borne coating, preventing cracks after the full process including hydrophobic top coating. Barrier property tests demonstrated reduced oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), along with improved oil resistance.  The film shows potential as a biodegradable barrier coating for sustainable packaging.
