Abstract

Liquid crystal (LC) disclination lines are topological singularities which are promising templates for programmable colloidal assembly. However, previous techniques have been limited in achieving rapid and precise control over assembled structures. Here, we demonstrate modulation of disclination, enabling dynamic repositioning of colloidal chains. By applying electric fields combined with thermal ramps, we actively modulate LC disclination lines, transporting tethered colloids along predetermined trajectories. This approach provides reversible colloidal assemblies without repatterning of surface, which can be achieved by leveraging electric field interactions and temperature-induced elasticity changes. These dynamically tunable assemblies hold significant promise for applications in reconfigurable soft photonics, programmable micro actuation, and stimuli-responsive adaptive metamaterials.
