Abstract

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), based on electrostatic induction and triboelectrification, offer promising energy harvesting solutions. This study introduces a hierarchical bio-inspired architecture with a 3D micro-architecture modeled after the male diving beetle to enhance the triboelectric effect. This architecture increases the contact area and compressibility, enabling conformal contact with the electrode surface in both dry and wet conditions. It boosts van der Waals and physical adhesion forces, significantly enhancing charge transfer. In dry conditions with 16 N of force, this beetle-inspired design outperforms flat and other 3D bio-inspired surfaces, generating the highest voltage (~42 V) and current (~1008 nA). This demonstrates that strategic physically adhesive structures can efficiently generate triboelectricity, a notable advance over traditional TENGs that depend on structureless or chemically adhesive designs.
