Abstract

A thermally decomposable additive, 1,4-butadiene sulfone (BDS), is used to fabricate high  β-phase  poly(vinylidene  fluoride)  (PVDF)  films.  During  the  in  situ  thermal retro-Diels-Alder reaction, BDS decomposes to generate H2SO3, which selectively interacts with the all-trans PVDF configuration via non-covalent interactions. This promotes spontaneous β-phase formation without mechanical drawing or thermal annealing. PVDF/BDS/water solutions yield 95% β-phase fraction with only 1.0 wt% BDS, confirmed through POM, SEM, FT-IR, DSC, and 2D-GIWAXS. The high β-phase PVDF exhibits superior ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties, with Ec = 50 MV/m, Pr = 5 μC/cm2, and d33 -25 pm/V. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) using this PVDF film delivers 2.5 times higher output charge density than neat PVDF, enabling efficient electronic device operation.
