Thermo-Adaptive Photonic Skin for Neuro-Actuation Using Ion-Gel Transistor with Block Copolymer

Abstract

We report a photonic neuro-actuating synaptic skin that enables thermoresponsive signal transmission, dynamic color modulation, and mechanical actuation. The device consists of a 3-terminal ion-gel transistor incorporating a semiconducting channel of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) blended with 2D titanium carbide (Ti₃C₂Tₓ) MXene, and a thermo-adaptive one-dimensional block copolymer photonic crystal as the gate insulator. The transistor exhibits temperature-dependent synaptic behavior accompanied by vivid, reversible structural color shifts, giving rise to a thermo-adaptive display synapse. Moreover, the synaptic output current is successfully converted into an amplified voltage signal, enabling temperature-dependent actuation of a connected soft actuator. This integrated system represents a new class of thermo-adaptive photonic neural skin, capable of visualizing synaptic activity and mimicking muscle-coupled neuronal responses in human skin.
