Sustainable Polymer Coatings with Antibacterial and Antifouling Properties Derived from Capsaicin-Based Compounds

Abstract

This study presents a fluorine-free hydrophobic polymer coating incorporating capsaicin-inspired moieties covalently bonded to the polymer backbone to prevent leaching. Poly(4-chloromethylstyrene) (PCMS) was synthesized by free radical polymerization and modified via nucleophilic substitution with N-vanillylnonanamide (CAP) to form PCAP# (# = 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mol%). Polymer films were fabricated on glass and cellulose through spin and dip coating, showing high transparency and moisture barrier properties. As CAP content increased, surface hydrophobicity improved and bacterial adhesion of E. coli and S. aureus was significantly reduced. Antifouling tests using dyes and stains showed decreased fouling at higher CAP substitutions. PCAP100 remained stable under saline and extreme pH, indicating strong durability. This coating system offers sustainable antibacterial and antifouling performance without using fluorinated compounds.
