Abstract
This study explores the use of liquid epoxidized natural rubber (LENR) as a sustainable asphalt modifier to improve process efficiency and performance at lower temperatures. Asphalt provides excellent waterproofing and adhesion but loses its properties under cold conditions. Traditional modifiers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymers and natural rubber (NR) require high processing temperatures (170–200 °C), increasing energy use. LENR, synthesized via epoxidation and depolymerization of NR, was blended with asphalt below 160 °C. The LENR-modified asphalt sheets exhibited enhanced tensile strength, adhesion, and wet adhesion. A clear relationship was observed between LENR content and mechanical performance. These results demonstrate that LENR effectively enhances asphalt properties while allowing energy-efficient processing, showing promise as an eco-friendly alternative.
