Abstract

This study investigates the effect of crosslink density on lifetime prediction of EPDM rubber used in HVDC cable accessories. EPDM specimens with controlled crosslink densities were prepared via peroxide vulcanization and characterized through thermal and mechanical analyses. Additionally, compression set tests were performed to evaluate the influence of crosslink density on elastic recovery and mechanical durability. Accelerated aging experiments simulated thermo-electrical stresses typical of service conditions. The Arrhenius-Weibull model was applied to develop accelerated lifetime prediction models incorporating crosslink density. The results demonstrate a significant correlation between crosslink density and aging behavior, with optimal crosslink density ranges exhibiting markedly enhanced resistance to thermo-electrical degradation, as well as reduced compression set values indicating superior elastic durability.
