Abstract

This study aims to enhance the mechanical performance of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites by improving interfacial adhesion between aramid nanofibers (ANFs) and the rubber matrix using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). GMA is a bifunctional monomer with epoxy and methacrylate groups; the epoxy reacts with amine groups on ANFs, while the methacrylate participates in crosslinking with SBR chains, promoting better filler dispersion and interfacial bonding. Composites containing varying ANF contents (0.5, 1, 2, 3 phr) were crosslinked via electron beam (EB) irradiation. FT-IR analysis confirmed chemical interactions among SBR, ANFs, and GMA. Tensile testing showed enhanced mechanical properties in GMA-containing composites, and SEM analysis of fracture surfaces revealed improved adhesion between fiber and rubber. These findings demonstrate that this interfacial control strategy effectively improves the performance of rubber nanocomposites.
