Abstract

The wide band gap energy of ZnO is beneficial for dye degradation applications owing to ultraviolet light absorbing capability, photocatalytic and antibacterial effects. The synthesis of ZnO using Aloe Vera is an eco-friendly approach to obtain uniform nanoparticles. The synthesis process involves a low-temperature (70 °C) reaction of zinc nitrate in the presence of Aloe Vera extract, with a pH of 12 controlled by adding aqueous NaOH dropwise. Subsequently, the synthesis eliminates the requirement for harmful chemicals, while delivering a fine-tuned ZnO nanoparticles having a range of 14-20 nm. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a band gap energy of 3.18 eV, which is suitable for degrading methylene blue dye by 82.43% in 210 minutes under 365 nm ultraviolet light. Moreover, the Aloe Vera-mediated ZnO nanoparticles indicated moderate antibacterial and strong antioxidant properties, making this green synthesis a sustainable solution for producing ZnO nanoparticles.
