Abstract

Precisely tracking small volumes of biofluids is essential for diagnostics, yet integrating optical nanosensors into a simple platform usable on rough, dynamic biosurfaces remains difficult. Here, we introduce a bioinspired 3D microstructured patch for real-time molecular tracing of nanoliter-scale fluids. Inspired by tree frog toe pads, the patch features soft, hexagonally arranged pillars and microchannels for conformal adhesion and fluid control. Near-infrared fluorescent SWCNT nanosensors were embedded in a hydrogel and anchored within elastomer microchannels for simultaneous fluid capture and sensing. We demonstrated real-time sweat analysis without exercise or iontophoresis, achieving fast capture (45 s) and detection from ≥75 nL. This study was published in: Nature Communications 16, 3272 (2025).
