Abstract

Fast-charging kinetics in Li-ion batteries, essential for high-power applications like electric vehicles, require high-loading level (HLL) electrodes with minimized inactive materials for superior energy density and cycle life. Traditional conductive additives like carbon black induce electrolyte impregnation issues and electrode degradation, while carbon nanotubes (CNTs) improve conductivity and mechanical strength but face dispersion challenges. Here, we introduce carboxymethyl cellulose-functionalized CNTs (CMC-CNTs) as adhesive conductive additives, significantly improving dispersion stability, mechanical strength, and conductive networks in HLL electrodes. Utilizing CMC-CNT enables binder reduction to ~1.6 wt%, enhances rate capability by 33%, and reduces ion resistance by 14% compared to commercial electrodes (~2 wt% binder). Our results demonstrate CMC-CNT's strong potential to improve the mechanical robustness and fast-charging performance of commercial Li-ion batteries.
