Abstract

Near-infrared (NIR) communication is essential for wearable technologies, as it facilitates fast and dependable data transmission for real-time monitoring of physiological parameters and smooth interactions between humans and machines. In this study, we have created ultra-thin (3-μm) skin-conforming organic photodetectors (OPDs) that boast a cut-off frequency (f-3dB) surpassing 3 MHz and an impressive specific detectivity (D*) of 1.56 × 1014 Jones at 790 nm, while still maintaining an f-3dB above 1 MHz even when subjected to 66% compression. When placed on a fingertip, the OPDs provide stable NIR communication with a bit-error rate of 10-3 under different incident angles, showing their capability for high-speed, angle-free reception of audio signals from a distant light source over a distance exceeding 100 m. These OPDs effectively address the previous constraints faced by NIR-OPDs related to slow photo response and low detectivity when mechanically deformed.
