Abstract

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a hazardous pollutant that must be reduced to the less toxic Cr(III) for effective water treatment. In this study, a cellulose-based composite monolith was developed as a sustainable 3D support for catalytic applications. The monolith was fabricated via phase separation of cellulose acetate in DMF using hexanol as a non-solvent, followed by deacetylation with NaOH. Abundant hydroxyl groups in the cellulose enabled in-situ reduction of metal nanoparticles, while embedded metal nanowires improved mechanical stability and facilitated galvanic replacement reactions. The resulting monolith efficiently reduced Cr(IV) to Cr(III) in a continuous-flow system within 3 hours. Additionally, the composite exhibited iodine adsorption capability, highlighting its multifunctional performance. This eco-friendly and scalable material offers strong potential for practical application in advanced wastewater remediation.
