Abstract

Organic gas sensors have attracted attention as next-generation sensing platforms due to their low-cost fabrication and potential for solution processing. However, sensors based on organic semiconductors like poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) exhibit poor sensitivity and selectivity toward gas analytes, limiting practical use. To address this, we developed a hybrid organic gas sensor by blending P3HT with porous metal-organic framework (MOF) MOF-303, whose organic ligands were chemically modified to enhance interactions with target gas molecules. This ligand modification, combined with MOF-303’s high surface area and strong affinity for polar gases, promotes gas diffusion and adsorption at the sensing interface, improving sensitivity and response speed. As a result, the hybrid device exhibited significantly improved responsiveness and selectivity to target gases. These findings highlight the great potential of ligand-modified MOF/organic semiconductor hybrids as next-generation platforms for high-performance gas sensors in wearable and environmental monitoring applications.
