Abstract

Polymer-based implantable medical devices are widely utilized due to their excellent mechanical properties and ease of fabrication. However, long-term use often results in biofilm formation caused by bacterial adhesion, leading to reduced device performance and severe health complications. In this study, we synthesized biocompatible polycaprolactone-based shape-memory polymers (SMPs) and investigated their properties to mitigate biofilm formation. The results revealed that the crystalline phase, characterized by densely packed polymer chains, reduces bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation due to its resistance to water penetration and protein adsorption. . In-vitro and in-vivo experiments demonstrated a significant reduction in biofilm formation on SMP surfaces compared to conventional materials. These findings highlight the potential of semi-crystalline SMPs as a transformative solution for next-generation biomedical applications
