Confinement-induced Inhibition of Azobenzene Photoisomerization

Abstract

Supramolecular chemistry enables the design of functional materials via non-covalent interactions. Among them, cyclodextrins (CDs) have been widely studied as host molecules due to their size-selective inclusion ability. Azobenzene (Azo) is a photo-responsive guest that forms complexes with α-CD and undergoes UV-responsive complexation. However, Azo photo-isomerization under confined status is poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the light-responsive dynamics of Azo while maintaining host-guest complexation with various sizes of CDs. Under confinement within complexation, α- and β-CD seems to inhibit the photo-isomerization of Azo, but γ-CD permits the isomerization due to a larger cavity size. This indicates that confinement by host molecules affect stimuli-responses of guest molecules. Our findings expand the understanding of supramolecular interactions beyond bulk systems and provide insights to design stimuli-responsive materials with confined-space effects.
