Abstract
Catheters and other indwelling medical devices are major contributors to hospital-acquired infections, primarily due to biofilm formation, underscoring the need for effective antifouling strategies. N-oxide compounds, forming stable hydration layers via dipole interactions, offer strong resistance to non-specific protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion. Amine-termianted N-oxide compounds were synthesized through amine oxidation and protecting group steps and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. A two-step surface functionalization was developed: first, a eumelanin-inspired coating was applied to diverse substrates; then, N-oxide compounds were grafted via Michael addition and Schiff base reactions. The antibacterial efficacy of the resulting surfaces was tested against E. coli and S. aureus, showing significant inhibition of bacterial adhesion. This work presents a bioinspired coating integrating melanin chemsitry and N-oxide antifouling functionality, offering a promising strategy.
