Abstract

Adhesives are essential across diverse industries, with growing interest in high-performance and adjustable adhesives. In this study, we developed photo-curable adhesives with thermal reversibility via UV-triggered aza-Michael reaction. Photo-reactive monomers (HDI-IHTet and HDI-IDTet) with o-nitrobenzyl groups released amines under UV light. Monomers underwent photo-deprotection within 5 minutes, confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Strong adhesion formed within 2 hours of UV irradiation through the reaction between diacrylates (BPAGDA and BDDA) with amines. In the lap shear test, HDI-IHTet system and HDI-IDTet system exhibited maximum shear strengths of 16.3 MPa/17.7 MPa and 28 MPa/32 MPa, respectively. To assess thermal reversibility, the adhesive layer was heated and cooled to room temperature. The adhesion strength of HDI-IHTet-BDDA recovered to 15.4 MPa, restoring 87%. These dual-responsive adhesives with high adhesion strengths open up a variety of potential applications.
