Abstract

The rapid and reliable detection of explosives is essential for public safety. Here, we report a series of pentiptycene polymers synthesized via SuFEx click chemistry, incorporating organosulfur side chains to modulate the electronic environment. This side-chain engineering strategy enhances photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and optimizes fluorescence quenching dynamics, leading to improved performance. Among the series, SP-7 exhibits a quantum yield of 74% and achieves >94% fluorescence quenching within 60 s toward DNT vapor—significantly outperforming the polymer P-1 (61%). Mechanistic studies using time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy confirm that both static and dynamic quenching processes are accelerated in SP-7, driven by favorable energy alignment. These results show that precise control over polymer side-chain structure via SuFEx chemistry offers a powerful route to tunable, high-performance sensors for explosive detection.
