Abstract

In response to global warming caused by rising CO2 emissions, among various approaches, the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides using MOFs as catalysts is promising; however, most MOFs are microporous and tend to aggregate, limiting mass transfer and reducing yields with bulky epoxides. To address these issues, we fabricated MOF-808@aerogel composites resulting in a hierarchical structure. This structure improves MOF dispersion and mass transfer in cycloaddition reactions.
MOF-808, a 6-connected Zr-based MOF, has a loose framework and low structural stability. To overcome this, we synthesized aerogels using precursors with different numbers of –OH groups (VDMMS, VDMMS-co-VMDMS (1:1), VMDMS, VMDMS-co-VTMS (1:1), VTMS) and incorporated MOF-808 within these. The –OH groups on the aerogel chemically bond with the Zr, yielding composites with enhanced structural robustness. Our results show that this strategy provides superior durability compared to pristine MOF-808.
