Enhanced Ion Trapping in Organic Synaptic Transistor Using Zwitterionic Crosslinkers

Abstract

Organic synaptic transistors provide a promising platform for advanced electronics by integrating memory and computation, making them ideal for artificial neural networks. In this study, we introduce zwitterionic chains as a novel strategy to enhance ion trapping. By incorporating these chains into polymer semiconductors via a photochemical crosslinker, we achieve significant improvements in ion trapping. When applied to organic synaptic transistors, these materials exhibit non-volatile characteristics, as well as reversible and continuous conductance tuning, along with extended retention time. The devices demonstrate an enhanced memory window of 8 V with pronounced hysteresis due to effective ion trapping, enabling highly stable and reconfigurable conductance states. These results suggest that our approach could contribute to the development of energy-efficient neuromorphic devices while also fostering more reliable, adaptable electronics for future bio-inspired systems.
