Abstract

Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) are high-performance materials which have high thermomechanical properties, and molecular alignment-induced thermal conductivity. Due to these outstanding properties, LCPs have attracted considerable attention in the electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries. In this study, we report the novel side-chain LCPs based on biphenyl mesogenic units with varying aliphatic spacers. A series of epoxide monomers were designed and synthesized, and the corresponding polymers were obtained via anionic ring-opening polymerization containing well-defined PEG-based main chains. Phase transitions and liquid crystalline behavior were investigated using DSC and POM. Thermal characteristics were evaluated via DSC, TGA, DMA, and thermal conductivity measurements. The molecular alignment were examined through SAXS and WAXS. The liquid crystalline behavior varied with alkyl spacer length, and the polymers showed enhanced properties over conventional PEG.
