Abstract

This study presents a solvent-free thiol-ene polymerization strategy conducted under thermal conditions with a radical initiator. A series of liquid crystalline diallyl monomers featuring twin biphenyl mesogens were synthesized and systematically evaluated. Among them, the optimal monomer was identified and copolymerized with a multifunctional thiol, yielding a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) with a highly ordered microstructure. The resulting LCE exhibits effective reprocessability and retains its mesophase characteristics after thermal reprocessing, contributing to sustainable material development. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) confirmed the presence of smectic phases in both the pristine and reprocessed networks. The elastomers also demonstrate enhanced thermal conductivity (0.4 W m-1 K-1), approximately twice that of conventional thermoset polymers.
