Polarity-Switchable Maleic Anhydride-Containing Copolymer for VOC-Free Polymer Coating Applications

Abstract
Global environmental concerns are driving efforts to reduce the use of toxic and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in polymer coatings. While water and/or ethanol are considered eco-friendly alternatives, they are primarily used with hydrophilic polymers, which often lack durability in humid environments. To address this limitation, a polarity-switchable copolymer containing maleic anhydride (MA) was developed. Base-induced ring opening renders the copolymer hydrophilic and water-soluble, enabling the formulation of water-based coatings. Subsequent heat treatment restores its hydrophobicity, ensuring robust performance. Various MA-containing copolymers have been developed for applications including anti-icing coatings and pressure-sensitive adhesives aimed at removing microplastics from water. These polymers completely eliminate the need for organic solvents, offering an eco-friendly solution and enabling large-scale spray applications without odor.
