The accumulation of plastic and electronic waste demands sustainable polymer innovations that unite functionality with environmental responsibility. We present two advances in biodegradable materials. First, a boric acid–crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) coating on paper markedly improves mechanical strength, oxygen and water vapor barrier properties, and oil resistance, while retaining marine biodegradability and biocompatibility—offering a sustainable alternative to polyethylene-based coatings for packaging. Second, Sepia melanin–shellac films flexographically printed on paper show stable electrical conductivity under ambient and humid conditions and achieve nearly complete biodegradation under composting, with negligible ecotoxicity. Together, these studies illustrate bio-inspired polymer design strategies that address plastic pollution and electronic waste, paving the way for green functional polymers in packaging and organic electronics.
