Ultrasound-Accelerated Alkaline Hydrolysis of PET at Ambient Temperature: A High-Speed Approach to Chemical Recycling

The depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via hydrolysis usually requires long reaction times and harsh conditions, hindering large-scale application. Although photocatalysis, microwave irradiation, and enzymatic depolymerization have been studied, most still demand high energy input and cost. In this study, we successfully established an ultrasound-assisted hydrolytic depolymerization process that dramatically accelerates PET breakdown under mild conditions. Ultrasound generates cavitation, creating localized microenvironments of high temperature and pressure that promote polymer chain scission. A toluene–ethanol co-solvent system with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst was used to enhance reactivity. Results showed that the reaction time decreased from 2 hours without ultrasound to 10 minutes with ultrasound at 60 °C and atmospheric pressure. Catalyst and solvent reusability were confirmed, indicating improved energy efficiency and potential economic benefits.
