In-situ Polymerized Fluorinated Gel Polymer Electrolytes Enabled by High-Energy Electron Beam Irradiation for Lithium-ion Batteries

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have gained much attention, which shows high-energy density and safety. However, SSEs possess problems applying commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are promising electrolytes for practical LIBs due to high ionic conductivity, chemical stability, and processability. Here, we developed in-situ polymerized GPEs using high-energy electron beam (E-beam) irradiation. GPEs were fabricated in 4.4 seconds of E-beam irradiation without the use of an initiator. Fluorinated monomer was introduced into the polymer matrix, resulting in enhanced electrochemical performance. Fluorinated GPE (FPE) exhibited high ionic conductivity of 1.53 mS cm−1 at 25 °C, a lithium transference number of 0.53, and good electrochemical stability of 5.1 V. In addition, FPE demonstrated an high initial discharge capacity of 197 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C in NCM 811/FPE/Li configuration and a capacity retention of 83% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C.
