The amphiphilic diblock copolymers, poly(γ-phenyl-ε-caprolactone)-block-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (PPhCL-b-mPEG), were synthesized via cationic ring-opening polymerization with varied hydrophobic block lengths. Phenyl substituents slowed polymerization rate and reduced crystallinity compared to PCL-b-PEG. Despite greater hydrophobicity, PPhCL-b-mPEG showed higher critical micelle concentrations (CMC) due to steric hindrance. These copolymers effectively stabilized high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs), offering enhanced long-term stability over PCL-b-PEG. The PPhCL-b-mPEG were successfully employed as emulsifiers for HIPE polymerization, resulting in the formation of highly porous materials. The observed decrease in pore size with increasing PPhCL chain length demonstrated the improved surfactant capability of PPhCL-b-mPEG in the formation of polyHIPE foams.
